Strahm was summoned in the top of the ninth to close out the game with a one-run lead over the Blue Jays. He tossed a clean frame, striking out one batter to convert his third save of the season. Strahm should continue to be in the mix for regular save chances alongside Jordan Romano.

Sánchez gave up a run in the second inning on a double and a base hit. The Blue Jays brought a second run in to score on a hit batter and a double in the fifth. Sánchez would toss two more scoreless innings, ending his day with just the two runs allowed and five strikeouts over seven. The 28-year-old left-hander will take a 3.05 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and an 88/28 K/BB ratio across 79 2/3 innings into a start against the Marlins in Miami on Thursday.

Francis got through three quiet innings against the Phillies before unraveling in the fourth, walking three batters and hitting two more to bring two runs in without a hit. He’d leave with two outs and the bases loaded at 74 pitches and four strikeouts. The 29-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 6.05 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and a 54/27 K/BB ratio across 64 innings. He’ll take on the White Sox in Toronto on Friday.

Gil resumed throwing at the end of May, but the right-hander still needs to build up arm strength and will need multiple bullpens/rehab starts before joining the New York rotation. Whenever he makes his first start, it’ll be his first outing of 2025 because of his lat strain.

Helfand reports that the strain is on the “milder” side, but not so mild that it won’t require another stint on the injured list for Lewis. The 26-year-old could return by the end of June or start of July if there are no setbacks, but a more concrete timeline should be provided in the coming days.

The outfielder was hit near the elbow area. Buxton stayed in the game initially, but then was removed for Harrison Bader not long after. The 31-year-old will likely need to undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury and if there’s any structural damage.

He took Ryan Borucki deep in a 1-1 game. The strikeouts keep piling up for Swanson, as two more today brought him up to 83 in 71 games. Still, he has 13 homers, 37 RBI and an adequate .239 average. If he stays healthy, he’s probably on his way to another 3.5-4 WAR season.

The one hit was an Andrew McCutchen homer that would have left only three ballparks. Boyd has turned in four straight quality starts, and he’s 10 for 14 in that category. In three of the four misses, he pitched five or 5 1/3 innings and allowed zero or two runs. Basically, he’s had one bad outing all year, giving up four runs in four innings on May 23, and the Cubs won that game anyway. He’ll face the Mariners next weekend.

The Cubs said after the game that it was lower back tightness for Pomeranz, who stayed in and finished the inning after the visit. Pomeranz has been terrific for the Cubs after being rejected by the Mariners, allowing only one unearned run (an automatic runner scoring in the 10th) over 18 1/3 innings in a setup role.

Palencia struck out two, and the lone batter to reach did so on a soft infield single. His ERA is sitting at 1.73. This was his third straight day on the mound, so he’ll be down Sunday, settling up a save chance for Brad Keller or maybe Ryan Pressly.

After struggling in his first two starts last month, Burrows has been very good twice and adequate once in three starts in June, leaving him with a 4.24 ERA overall. The eight strikeouts today topped his previous high by two, and he went without a walk for the second time in his five starts. He’ll make his next start at home against the Rangers.

The homer off Matthew Boyd, which produced the only run of the game for the hapless Pirates, was McCutchen’s 326th of his career, moving him past Willie Horton, Jermaine Dye and Justin Upton for 127th place all-time. Next up are Shawn Green and Mo Vaughn at 328.

That series begins next week, and it could be either Monday or Tuesday according to Boone. It’s remarkable progress for Stanton, as it seemed possible — maybe even probable — that the slugger was going to need surgery on both elbows and miss the 2025 campaign. The 35-year-old will have some rust to shake off even after the rehab assignment, but everyone knows what Stanton is capable of with his prestigious power.

O’Neill will not do any baseball activities for a week. The outfielder will then likely restart his rehab assignment, and if things go well he could be back in the Baltimore lineup by the end of June. That will depend largely on how O’Neill reacts to the injection, however.

Stephenson’s slam off Jack Flaherty in the fifth was the second of his career. He struggled in his first 15 games after coming off the injured list at the beginning of May, but he’s hit .329 with five homers, five doubles and 17 RBI in his last 18 games. The Reds seem a little more hesitant to use Stephenson at DH now that they’ve shed their third catcher by moving on from Austin Wynns, so he was out of the starting lineup entirely on Sunday and Wednesday. He did DH with Jose Trevino catching today, though.

Singer got through six for just the second time in his last seven starts. Still, the quicker hooks have been working for him. It just wasn’t necessary today with the Reds giving him seven runs to work with. Singer is 7-4 with a 4.34 ERA and a 60/32 K/BB in 74 2/3 innings. He’s set to face the Cardinals next time out.

Flaherty opened with three scoreless frames today before giving up a solo homer to Elly De La Cruz in the fourth and a grand slam to Tyler Stephenson as part of a six-run fifth. Spencer Steer also took him deep in the inning. Coming into this one, Flaherty had allowed a total of two homers and six runs in his previous five starts combined. He also walked five today, topping his previous season high by two. The loss took his ERA from 3.41 to 4.03. He’ll try to shake it off before taking on the Rays next week.

If it wasn’t a rout already, McLain made it one by increasing the Reds’ lead from six runs to nine against John Brebbia in the eighth. He’s batting .229/.325/.439 with two homers and seven RBI in 11 games this month. It’s not great, but it’s a big improvement over his April and May.

Not terribly surprising that the Twins are going to want to get imaging done to determine the extent of the hamstring strain that the 26-year-old infielder suffered on Friday night. Lewis, who spends more time on the injured list than he does in the Twins’ lineup, could be heading for a return trip back there before the weekend is through.

The 27-year-old outfielder cracked the Reds’ Opening Day roster, but struggled in his time with the Reds, hitting just .083 (1-for-12) in his limited action. He wasn’t much better at Triple-A Louisville either, slashing .144/.336/.186 with zero homers, eight RBI and a 29/22 K/BB ratio over 133 plate appearances. The 30-year-old outfielder has been shelved since the end of May due to inflammation in his left shoulder. He has been limited to just light throwing drills since that time, so it sounds like once he is ready to resume hitting it’s going to take him a while to build back up and he’ll probably require a minor league rehab assignment as well.

He’ll throw a side session on Sunday before rejoining the Bisons for another start on Wednesday. If all goes well with that one, he could then get clearance to return to the Blue Jays’ rotation.
