Woof. Paddack also walked a batter while recording only one strikeout in the ballgame. He entered Friday’s outing having allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last 12 starts. The Astros jumped on him early and often in this one, scoring three times in the opening inning, twice in the second and three times in the third — all without the benefit of a home run. Paddack then served up a solo homer to Jose Altuve in the fourth inning. He got 12 swings and misses on 85 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 26 percent. All of the good work that he had done on his ratios over the past two and a half months was erased in four innings on Friday, as his ERA ballooned from 3.53 to 4.30 in one fell swoop. He’ll attempt to rebound when he takes on the Reds in Cincinnati on Thursday.

Marte has turned his season around in a big way. He has a .960 OPS over his last 15 games and has worked his way back into a nearly full-time role at designated hitter for the Mets since Mark Vientos went out with a hamstring injury. Sadly, as he’s now 36 years old, he’s no longer anything close to the prolific base stealer he once was with four on the season.

Solid again, Holmes has impressively asserted himself as a legitimate starting pitcher through the first half of this season. Yet, he was pulled a bit surprisingly after just five innings of work and 79 pitches here. His velocity dipped a good bit during that fifth inning and the Mets would likely want to manage his workload a tad given since he’s already thrown more innings than he has in any major league season to this point since he’s working as a starter again. Of course, the Mets’ bullpen promptly coughed up their four run lead in the following inning. Be on the lookout for Holmes’ fastball velocity as he continues to work through his transition and whether or not the Mets continue to limit him around 80 pitches, just like they did here. Also, after not allowing a home run through his first seven starts of the season, he’s now given nine in his last seven starts. His next is scheduled to come on the road against the Braves.

It was a given that Acuña would run less in his return from a torn ACL, but we were still wondering how much less. He finally attempted and succeeded on his first steal in his 19th game of the year tonight. In his MVP season of 2023, he attempted 87 steals, with 73 successes, in 159 games.

After striking out 12 Giants last time out, Elder seemed like a fine streaming choice against the impotent Rockies tonight. However, he couldn’t make it out of the fourth while giving up seven hits and three walks. A couple of meekly hit doubles and groundball singles didn’t help the cause. Oddly enough, the Rockies were 3-for-8 when they hit the ball hard against him and 4-for-6 when they didn’t. Elder isn’t recommended with the Mets next on the schedule.

The Braves seem to have settled on Iglesias in the eighth and Dylan Lee in the ninth for now, but it’s not working out for Lee; both times he’s been in position to close, the Braves offense has added on and turned it into a non-save situation. That was the case tonight; Iglesias pitched in a three-run game before the Braves scored five times in the bottom of the eighth. Lee then followed with a scoreless ninth. We’d still say Iglesias is the better use of a roster spot in fantasy leagues, even though Lee probably will get some save chances in the short term.

The Rockies were actually up by three runs when Márquez left tonight, only to end up losing 12-4. Márquez now has a 3.54 ERA and a 27/6 K/BB over 28 innings in his last two starts. If he can maintain this, contenders will be after him at the deadline. He’ll face the Nationals next.

McMahon has been an utter disaster with men on base this season — he entered the night with 19 RBI in 268 plate appearances and seven of his eight homers had been solo shots — so it was nice to see him knock in runners twice tonight. It’s just his third multi-RBI game of the year, and it’s his first with three RBI since July 30 of last year. Contrast that with fellow NL West third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who has nine three-RBI games this season and actually delivered three in a row last month.

Narváez was the hero in a game that included a shutout bid by Garrett Crochet and 450 foot home run by Aaron Judge in the ninth inning to break up said shutout bid. That’s baseball though. Narváez, the former Yankee, smoked a two-out, two-strike pitch from Tim Hill high off the Green Monster to plate the winning run. He’s been a pleasant surprise this season with six home runs and an .827 OPS so far.

Well, sometimes in baseball all you can do is tip your cap. Crochet was just two outs away from both the first shutout and complete game of his career before Aaron Judge put a 3-2 fastball out and over the Green Monster onto the streets of Boston. That shouldn’t take away from this masterful start though. He only allowed one Yankee to reach scoring position before that blast and overpowered them with fastballs and cutters at the top of the zone. He’s ascended to undoubted ace status and can be trusted as one of the five or so best pitchers in baseball moving forward. His next start is scheduled to come against the Mariners on the road.

Garrett Crochet took the mound in the ninth inning just three outs away from the first shutout and complete game of his career. Then, Judge hit a 443 foot moonshot on a 3-2, 100 mph fastball that was on the inner black. Objectively, it was a fine pitch and another example of Judge’s supreme greatness. Yet, it merely prolonged defeat as the Yankees lost this game in the 10th inning. Still, that shouldn’t take away from Judge’s brief heroics and the pure awe that’s come from watching him with his 26 home runs, .390 batting average, and 1.265 OPS as we near the halfway point of the season.

The crafty Yarbrough turned into another fine outing here all things considered. Despite constant traffic over the first few innings, he did well to limit damage and not let the Red Sox get the big hit they were looking for. His resurgence has been fueled by some alterations to his changeup and that pitch accounted for five of his nine total swings-and-misses in this start and was incredibly important against the Red Sox’s right-handed heavy lineup. He’s lined up to face the Angels at home in his next start.

Greene swatted a 426-foot (111.1 mph EV) solo shot off of Nick Martinez that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the third inning. He then broke the game open with a bases-clearing three-run double off of Taylor Rogers in the sixth inning that made it a 7-2 ballgame. Greene finished the night 2-for-5. He has been a rock in the middle of the Tigers’ lineup this season, slashing .279/.334/.498 with 14 homers, 48 RBI and one stolen base.

Torres wasted no time in this one, crushing the very first pitch that Nick Martinez threw for a 412-foot (109.2 mph EV) solo shot that gave the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage. The 28-year-old second baseman added on a 376-foot (99.9 mph EV) opposite-field solo shot off of Ian Gibaut in the eighth inning. The 24-year-old hurler struck out four batters on the night while issuing one base on balls. All of the scoring done against him came via the long ball, as TJ Friedl swatted a solo shot in the third inning and Elly De La Cruz added a solo blast in the fifth inning. Montero got six swings and misses on 83 pitches in the ballgame, posting a CSW of 28 percent. On the season, he now sports a 3-1 ERA, 4.24 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 34/18 K/BB ratio over 51 innings through his first 10 outings. He’ll do battle against the Pirates his next time out at home on Thursday and could make for a viable streaming option in deeper mixed leagues.

The superstar shortstop victimized Tigers’ right-hander Keider Montero for a 374-foot (109.8 mph EV) solo shot in the fifth inning that pulled the Reds to within a run at 3-2. That would be as close as they would get. He also singled in the seventh inning and drove in a run with an RBI double in the ninth inning. The 34-year-old right-hander piled up five strikeouts on the night while issuing a pair of walks. He served up a solo homer to Gleyber Torres on the first pitch that he threw in the ballgame. Martinez also gave up solo shots to Riley Greene in the third inning and Javier Baez in the fourth. He then exited after walking Baez to open the sixth inning and he ultimately came around to score. Suárez was downright masterful here. Toronto didn’t have a runner reach scoring position until the seventh inning and barely any balls in play had the chance to do damage. His changeup was the star, forcing four swings-and-misses along with plenty of soft contact sitting on the low and away corner against this right-handed heavy Blue Jays lineup. Suárez looks a lot like the pitcher he did in the first half last season with a 2.32 ERA after another gem. He’ll look to keep his momentum going next time out against the Marlins.

Schwarber’s homer was the big blow for the Phillies in this game against Kevin Gausman who was excellent outside of a horrific second inning. That was Schwarber’s 22nd long ball of the season, good for fourth in the league, as he’s putting together one of the best overall seasons of his career to this point.

Gausman’s disastrous second inning ruined his entire night. It started with a walk, then two straight doubles, another walk, and finally a three-run home run from Kyle Schwarber that pushed the Phillies’ lead to 4-0. Funny enough, Otto Kemp was thrown out at the plate during that inning on Brandon Marsh’s double when Kemp started the play at second base. Besides that inning, he only allowed one other hit, two walks and looked very sharp. Alas, we can’t erase it from his ledger. He’ll look to get back on track next time out against the Diamondbacks.

The fact that the M’s are already optioning Evans out bodes well for Logan Gilbert potentially rejoining the Mariners’ rotation on Monday as had been anticipated. Evans did a nice job in seven starts at the big league level, posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 30/12 K/BB ratio over 40 innings. He should get another opportunity the next time the Mariners need an extra starter.

He’ll function in a middle relief role for the M’s.

It’s the first time that Glasnow has faced live hitters since landing on the injured list. Expect him to repeat the exercise another time or two before we start hearing mentions of a minor league rehab assignment.
