The homer makes it a good day, of course, but it was a 345-foot fly to left that was only a homer in one major league ballpark and probably a hit in just one other (it’d have gone off the Green Monster in Fenway). Lee struck out in his other three at-bats. He has been performing well on the whole lately, though; he’s batting .341/.372/.537 in 12 games this month.

Jackson was summoned to close out the game with a one-run lead over the White Sox in the top of the ninth inning. He gave up a one-out base hit and struck out the next batter before Robert Garcia replaced him for the final out. Garcia then gave up a double to tie the game before ending the ninth inning. Garcia should continue to work as the primary closer in Texas, though the situation could remain fluid with Jackson working into the mix.

deGrom held the White Sox to just one baserunner through three innings before two hits, a double, and a sacrifice fly put two runs on the board for Chicago in the fourth inning. The 36-year-old right-hander has posted an incredible 2.19 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and an 80/17 K/BB ratio across 82 1/3 innings. He’ll take on the Royals in Texas on Thursday.

That outing will come at some point next week. Sheehan is recovering from Tommy John surgery, but struck out seven over 3 1/3 innings in his most recent rehab start, and the Dodgers liked enough of what they saw to believe he can contribute to the rotation. Sheehan has some significant upside in his right arm, but fantasy managers will want to see the matchup before considering using the right-hander. It’s possible that outing could come against the Padres, and it might be best to take a wait-and-see approach if that’s the case.

The surgery could cost Montes De Oca the rest of his season. The 25-year-old was placed on the injured list June 10 with inflammation in his back, and at the very best, the right-hander won’t be back for the Diamondbacks’ bullpen until near the end of the summer.

Strider was upset about being removed after 87 pitches, but he had nothing else to prove today. Even if he had been facing a major league lineup, he would have been in good shape today with his fastball back up to 96.2 mph on average, a gain of 1.1 mph over his season mark. He topped out at 98.1 mph. His 35 sliders produced an incredible 17 whiffs on 23 swings. The victory makes Strider 1-5 with a 4.35 ERA. Lee appears to be the Braves’ closer for the moment, but the team hasn’t actually been able to get him any save chances since Raisel Iglesias lost the job. Maybe it’s the baseball gods’ way of telling Brian Snitker that Lee was more valuable as a matchup guy. In his last three outings, he’s pitched with the score 7-1, 12-4 and now 4-0. Prior to this, 25 of Lee’s 29 appearances had come in games in which the teams were within two runs of each other.

The one hit was an Andrew McCutchen homer that would have left only three ballparks. Boyd has turned in four straight quality starts, and he’s 10 for 14 in that category. In three of the four misses, he pitched five or 5 1/3 innings and allowed zero or two runs.
